Season 2007-08

Another new initiative to enhance the tournament came in the shape of the ERC European Rankings, devised by the tournament organisers to shape the make-up of the draw by taking into account the results of all clubs over the previous four seasons. The first draw using the new, tiered system worked a treat because the 2007/08 competition ended with a head-to-head between the two top ranked teams in the tournament, Toulouse and Munster.

It was the third time the Millennium Stadium had hosted the Heineken Cup final and the MUNSTER fans must have felt very much at home having followed their team to the Welsh capital in 2002 and 2006. They reached the decider thanks to a vital 19-3 home win over London Wasps in Round 6, and then with away wins in England against Gloucester and Saracens in the knockout phase.

Toulouse also lost twice in the pool stage, but then blasted their way past Cardiff Blues in the quarter-finals and held out London Irish at Twickenham Stadium to reach their fifth final. It was close, it was tense and, in the end, it was the boot of Ronan O'Gara that settled things. Denis Leamy and Yves Donguy swapped tries, but O'Gara kicked three penalties and a conversion to clinch a 16-13 victory to make Munster the fourth team to win the Heineken Cup twice. His reward was to go up with Paul O'Connell to pick up the trophy.
